It’s the combination of swelling, heaviness, and the sense that your legs are not ready to produce force again. Compression garments are one of the few recovery tools that can meaningfully target that feeling.

What compression garments actually do

Post-training compression works by applying external pressure to the limb, which helps limit interstitial fluid accumulation and can improve venous return and lymphatic drainage. The best evidence does not support compression as a magic accelerator of physiological repair. It is not rebuilding muscle fibers or refilling glycogen faster by itself. What it does do, consistently, is improve recovery-related perceptions and often reduce circumference or swelling markers after demanding exercise, especially when used for several hours post-session (Hill et al., 2014; Marqués-Jiménez et al., 2016). For athletes who stack sessions close together, that difference is often enough to preserve training quality.

Who benefits most

Compression garments are most useful when the training stress creates obvious limb congestion or when the next session comes quickly.

Best-fit athletes include:

- Lifters doing high-volume lower-body work 2-4 times per week
- Runners and field sport athletes with repeated sprint or jump-heavy sessions
- Hybrid athletes who lift and run on the same day or on back-to-back days
- Tournament, camp, or travel athletes who must recover under time pressure

If your program has plenty of recovery time and your main issue is general fatigue from low sleep or under-fueling, compression will not rescue you. But if your main problem is swollen legs and poor readiness after hard work, it can help.

What the research actually shows

Meta-analyses and reviews generally find small to moderate benefits for perceived soreness, recovery perception, and swelling, with more mixed effects on objective performance tests. The pattern is straightforward: compression tends to help how athletes feel more than it helps measurable strength or sprint performance the next day (Hill et al., 2014; Marqués-Jiménez et al., 2016).

That is not a flaw. For serious training, perceived readiness matters because it influences adherence and session execution. If compression lowers the feeling of damage and stiffness enough that you move better in the warm-up, you may lift and run with better intent. That can make the tool useful even when lab outcomes look modest.

A second important point: timing matters. Compression appears most useful when worn after exercise for several hours, not just briefly on the way home. Many protocols use 4-12 hours of wear, and some studies use overnight wear. The pressure needs to be enough to influence fluid movement, but not so high that it becomes uncomfortable or restricts movement excessively (Marqués-Jiménez et al., 2016).

How much compression pressure to use

For most athletes, the sweet spot is moderate compression rather than extreme tightness.

A practical target is roughly 15-30 mmHg for recovery use. That range is commonly used in sports compression studies and is generally tight enough to provide a meaningful effect without turning into a circulation problem or a sleep disruption. Extremely high compression is not automatically better, and if it feels numb, painful, or leaves deep marks, it is too much.

How to use compression without wasting money

Compression works best as one part of a recovery stack, not the foundation.

Non-negotiables still come first:

- Sleep: 7-9 hours for most athletes, more during heavy blocks
- Carbohydrate: replenish hard sessions with adequate carbs, especially if training again within 24 hours
- Protein: 0.3-0.4 g/kg per meal, 3-5 times per day, to support remodeling
- Hydration and sodium: replace sweat losses so plasma volume and performance recover

Compression is the add-on. It may help reduce swelling and improve perceived recovery, but it will not fix low energy intake, poor sleep, or badly designed programming. If you have to choose, pay for better food and more sleep before you buy elite-grade tights.

A practical protocol for lifters, runners, and hybrid athletes

After a hard lower-body lift

- Finish training
- Rehydrate and get a carb + protein meal within 1-2 hours
- Put on compression tights or sleeves within 30 minutes
- Wear for 6-8 hours
- Keep easy walking in the evening, 10-20 minutes
- Next day: use your normal warm-up, then judge readiness by movement quality and pain-free range of motion

After a hard run, interval session, or field workout

- Change into compression socks or tights immediately after cooling down
- Wear 4-8 hours, or overnight if you tolerate it well
- Do not pair compression with complete inactivity; short, easy walking helps fluid movement
- If the next session is within 24 hours, prioritize carbs and sleep along with the garment

During a tournament or multi-session day

- Use compression between sessions to reduce swelling and the heavy-leg effect
- Favor calf sleeves or tights depending on where swelling accumulates
- Keep the garment on during travel if sitting for long periods, as long as it remains comfortable

Who should be cautious

Compression is generally safe, but it is not for every situation.

Be cautious or get medical advice if you have:

- Known peripheral vascular disease
- Significant arterial insufficiency
- Unexplained limb swelling
- Severe varicose complications
- Neuropathy or loss of sensation
- Skin issues that worsen with tight garments

If a garment causes numbness, tingling, color change, pain, or persistent deep indentations that do not resolve, stop using it and reassess fit or medical status.
