What to avoid: the oral bacteria problem
Here is the detail most people miss: antibacterial mouthwash can blunt nitrate conversion because it disrupts the oral bacteria needed to turn nitrate into nitrite. That means aggressive mouthwash use around supplementation can reduce the effect (Kapil et al., 2013).
Practical rule: do not use antibacterial mouthwash in the hours before or after nitrate supplementation if you want the full benefit. Regular brushing is fine. If you are using a beet shot before training, keep the mouthwash for another part of the day.
Who benefits most
The best responders are usually people who have lower baseline nitric oxide availability or worse vascular function: older athletes, people with elevated blood pressure, and those with less efficient diet quality.
