The goal is to increase mechanical tension, reduce cheating through rebound, and improve control in positions where athletes are usually weak or sloppy.

Eccentric contractions are uniquely potent because muscle can produce more force while lengthening than while shortening. That matters for hypertrophy and strength because high mechanical tension is one of the main drivers of adaptation (Schoenfeld et al., 2017). One caveat: very slow tempos and very high volumes increase soreness and can interfere with subsequent sessions. The solution is not to avoid eccentrics; it is to dose them intelligently.

Why tissue tolerance improves

Tissue tolerance is the body’s ability to repeatedly handle a stressor without pain, breakdown, or performance loss. For lifters and runners, that often means stronger tendons, more resilient musculotendinous units, and better tolerance to deceleration and braking forces.

Controlled eccentrics are one of the most practical ways to load tissue in a way that is hard to fake. Tendons respond to progressive loading, and slow heavy resistance training is a staple in tendon rehabilitation and prevention models (Bohm et al., 2015).
