RPE (rating of perceived exertion) measures how hard a set was on a 1–10 scale, where 10 means nothing left in the tank. RIR (reps in reserve) is the same idea flipped: RPE 8 equals 2 reps in reserve. This calculator converts weight × reps at a given RPE into an estimated %1RM and one-rep max.
Percentages assume today's strength equals the day you set your max — but sleep, stress, and accumulated fatigue move real strength several percent day to day. RPE lets you autoregulate: the prescribed effort stays constant while the load adjusts to what you actually have.
The two systems work best together. Use percentages to plan the week, then use RPE to sanity-check in the session: if a planned 80% single moves like an RPE 9, your training max is set too high — recalculate rather than grind.
You could have done two more reps with good form — 2 reps in reserve. RPE 9 is one rep left, RPE 10 is a true maximal effort, and RPE 7 or below is comfortably submaximal.
Calibrate them: occasionally take a set to actual failure and compare the result with what you predicted. Most lifters underestimate — a set that feels like RPE 9 is often RPE 7.5–8. Filming bar speed helps too; it slows measurably as you approach true failure.
Neither is universally better — RPE tracks daily readiness while percentages enforce structure. Beginners usually do better on fixed percentages while they learn what real effort feels like; experienced lifters get more from RPE-capped top sets with percentage backoffs.
